Dental Crown Hood River OR

Whether you've broken a tooth or need a root canal, a dental crown functions as a cap for a damaged tooth. It covers the entire visible portion of your tooth, serving as a structural and cosmetic fix. Crowns are an easy, painless fix that serve a variety of purposes.

Curious About Crown Lengthening?

What are crowns made of?

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials. Metal crowns (most often alloys) are some of the strongest, and last the longest, but they don't match the color of your natural teeth. Some people may also be allergic to metal. Porcelain fused to metal crowns can match your natural color except a metal line can often be seen through the porcelain. They are also not ideal for those with metal allergies. Resin crowns are less expensive, but are more likely to suffer damage, wearing down quickly or susceptible to breakage, giving them the shortest lifespan.

The most common types of crowns, however, are ceramic crowns. They perfectly match the color of your natural teeth. They are great for people who have metal allergies and, although they aren't quite as strong as metal or even porcelain fused to metal, they are able to withstand normal chewing forces.

Why crowns?

Crowns serve a variety of purposes, including:

•  Strengthening a weak or damaged tooth.
•  Replacing large fillings when too much of the tooth is missing.
•  Covering a tooth following a root canal.
•  Covering a discolored or misshapen tooth.
•  Attaching bridges.
•  Covering the screws of dental implants.

The procedure for getting a crown takes two visits. On the first visit, the damaged teeth are examined to make certain they are going to be strong enough to support a crown. Then, the tooth, or teeth, are filed down to make room for the crown to comfortably fit over it. Or, if the tooth is too damaged from decay, it is filled. After, impressions are taken and set off to a lab to create your permanent crown, in the meantime, you will be given a temporary crown.

While you are waiting for your permanent crown, it is best to avoid certain foods. This will help keep your temporary crown from suffering damage. Stay away from really hard or crunchy foods, so it doesn't break. Avoid sticky foods to prevent it from being pulled off.

When your permanent crown is ready, you will return to the office. The crown will be checked for fit and then cemented in place. After it's set, you will be able to go back to eating all of your favorite foods.

Caring for your dental crown is no different than caring for your natural teeth. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Floss daily. Use mouthwash. Be sure to visit the office at least twice a year for your exam and cleaning. During your regular exams, the dentist will make sure to check the crown for any signs of damage, helping to prevent any from occurring.
