Dental Sealants

A woman receiving Dental Sealants in Hood River, ORPreventive dentistry is the best form of dentistry. At Bruce Burton, DMD,,
we want to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Our goal is to help you and your family avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and other oral health problems. Brushing and flossing are the best ways to maintain proper oral health. Unfortunately, the back teeth are sometimes difficult to clean, especially for our younger patients. For this reason, we offer dental sealants to reduce the risk of decay.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are thin plastic coverings that are typically placed on the chewing surfaces of the permanent posterior teeth. Posterior teeth, include the molars and premolars and have deep grooves or fissures that are difficult to clean. Often, these grooves trap food debris and harmful bacteria that attack the enamel and lead to cavities. A dental sealant provides additional protection for the grooved and fissured areas, making them easier to clean, and less vulnerable to decay. Each sealant acts as a barrier between the tooth enamel and bacteria in plaque.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Children and teenagers benefit most from dental sealants, especially those who are more prone to tooth decay. Ideally, children should get sealants on their permanent posterior teeth as soon as they erupt. If the chewing surfaces of these teeth are sealed, decay is less likely during the cavity-prone years of ages six to 14. In some cases, we may also recommend dental sealants for baby teeth, especially if a child has teeth with unusually deep grooves. Baby teeth essentially act as placeholders for permanent ones. If a baby tooth is lost prematurely due to decay, the remaining teeth may shift out of position to compensate for the open space. This can lead to future complications with their permanent teeth.

While it is less common, adults may also benefit from dental sealants. If you are at a greater risk for tooth decay, [[[CLIENTEX:DOCNAME1]]] may recommend a sealant before a filling becomes necessary.

Dental Sealant Procedure

The dental sealant procedure is quick, easy, and painless. Before we apply the sealant, we will thoroughly clean the occlusal (bite) surface of the tooth. Then, the tooth must be rinsed with water and completely dried. After the tooth is dry, an acidic solution is placed on the grooved areas to create a rougher surface than the surrounding enamel. The rough surface will help the sealant better adhere to the tooth. Next, the sealant is placed onto the tooth in liquid form. After the surface is completely covered, we will use a special curing light to harden the material. Once hard, the sealant acts like a varnish coating that fills the grooves and protects the tooth.

After a sealant is in place, it can last for many years. In fact, a sealant can protect a tooth from decay for up to ten years! At following appointments, [[[CLIENTEX:DOCNAME1]]] will check the sealant for wear or damage. If necessary, we can also replace sealants to extend protection.
