Dental X-Rays

A digital Dental X-Ray in Hood River, OregonWhile brushing and flossing at home every day are essential habits for preventing serious oral health issues. Even with proper oral care at home, though, it is still possible to be faced with complications. In some instances, issues may occur, but there are no symptoms early on, making detecting the issue more difficult. In addition to regular preventative cleanings, exams are also crucial. Exams enable us to detect oral health issues in their earliest stages before more serious consequences occur. However, there are more structures in your mouth than the ones that can be seen with the naked eye. Bruce Burton, DMD, can help to make more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment plans with X-rays.

What are X-Rays?

When we look inside your mouth, there is only so much that we can see. There are still plenty of essential components in your mouth that are invisible to the naked eye. However, being able to see these components is crucial for providing you with optimal oral care.

X-rays are a type of imaging technology that allows us to see the hidden components of your mouth. With these images, we can see between your teeth, the roots of your teeth, and the jawbone. We can spot hidden areas of decay, fractures below the gum line, assess bone loss, detect infections, and so much more. With these images, we can find issues in their earliest stages and treat them before they have an opportunity to cause more significant complications.

Traditional X-Rays

X-ray technology was first discovered in 1895. X-rays started being used shortly after for examination purposes. Traditional X-ray technology uses radiation to capture images. Once the images are taken, they need to be developed in a dark room.

While traditional X-rays have been effective, they do have several significant disadvantages. For one, the images take time to develop. To be developed, they require a darkroom. This means that you are left waiting in the chair while your images are prepared. Valuable appointment time is wasted. By the time the images are ready, there is not much time left to go over your images or answer your questions. There is also significant concern surrounding the safety of traditional X-ray technology, which can cause patients to avoid essential imaging.

Digital X-Rays

Digital X-rays are a technological improvement over traditional X-ray technology. Rather than radiation, digital X-rays use electronics to capture images. An electronic sensor is placed in your mouth. The sensor is attached to a computer. With a few button clicks, we can capture the necessary images. Shortly after the images are taken, they are displayed on the computer monitor.

The Benefits of Digital X-Rays

Digital X-ray technology provides several benefits, including:

•  Taking images is quick and easy.
•  Reduced radiation exposure. Digital X-rays reduce exposure up to 95%.
•  Images are displayed almost immediately on the computer. There is no need for a dark room. We do not even need to leave you alone. More of your appointment time is spent with you.
•  Using specialized software, we can manipulate the image so that we can see the tiniest details. This enables more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment plans.

X-ray technology allows us to diagnose a wide variety of oral health issues that might otherwise go unnoticed until more serious symptoms occur. They also help us to provide you with the most effective treatment plans possible. For more information on X-rays, call Bruce Burton, DMD, today at (541) 386-2020.
