Oral Cancer Screening

Digital X-rays are one of the Tools used for Oral Cancer Screening in Hood RiverBrushing and flossing daily are essential oral care habits to have. Along with these daily habits, it is recommended that you have at least two professional dental cleanings and exams each year. These visits are designed to help you maintain the health of your mouth and also check your mouth for signs of any potential issues. During your oral exams, your teeth and gums are checked for signs of damage, decay, and infection. Spotting issues in their earliest stages allow for prompt treatment for the prevention of serious issues later. At Bruce Burton, DMD,, another part of your oral exam is an oral cancer screening.

What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer, or cancer of the mouth, is a devastating disease that affects over 40,000 Americans every single year. It can strike any of the oral tissues inside your mouth and affects the functions of your mouth as well as your quality of life. If not detected, and treated, early, oral cancer can spread to other parts of your body, and can quickly become fatal. Getting treatment early is essential for increasing your chances of beating oral cancer and making a full recovery.

Oral Cancer Risk Factors

There are several factors that can increase your risk of developing oral cancer.

•  Certain lifestyle habits. Smoking and drinking are some of the biggest factors that increase your risk for oral cancer. Approximately 90% of oral cancer patients have used some tobacco product. 70% to 80% of oral cancer patients were heavy drinkers.
•  HPV. There are several strains of HPV or human papillomavirus. There are only a few that are associated with an increased risk for oral cancer.
•  Your age. The older you are, the greater your risk.
•  Family history. If someone in your family has had oral cancer, your risk is higher.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer to Watch For

During your regular oral exams, we check the soft tissues of your mouth for abnormalities. However, symptoms of oral cancer can strike at any time, so being able to recognize the symptoms can help you to take action sooner. Symptoms of oral cancer include:

•  Red or white lesions in your mouth.
•  Unusual growths.
•  Sores that refuse to heal.
•  Bite changes.
•  Difficulty with things such as eating, speaking or swallowing.
•  Numbness in the jaw or chin.

Diagnosing Oral Cancer

Your oral cancer screening is only a part of the diagnostic process. If we detect something unusual, we will conduct a more thorough oral evaluation. Along with a visual examination of your mouth, we also take digital X-rays. We may also perform a soft tissue biopsy. This biopsy involves the removal of a portion of the unusual lesion in your mouth for closer examination under a microscope, which allows us to more closely examine the cells of the tissue. A soft tissue biopsy is one of the best diagnostic tools we have to determine the presence of or rule out oral cancer. If oral cancer is detected, we are then able to recommend you for the appropriate treatment. The earlier oral cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances of restoring your oral, and your overall, health.

Oral cancer is a devastating disease, but it can be treated if diagnosed and addressed in the early stages. While we check for signs of oral cancer during your regular oral exams, the symptoms can begin to show at any time. Do not wait until your next appointment if you start to notice anything strange about your mouth. Call Bruce Burton, DMD, to schedule your appointment today at (541) 386-2020.
