Tissue Grafting

A woman who just received a tissue graft in Hood River OregonAt Bruce Burton, DMD,, we provide some restorative treatments designed to improve the appearance of your smile and your oral health. One of these treatments, tissue grafting, may be necessary to protect your teeth from the damaging effects of gum recession. Gum recession occurs when the tissue that surrounds your teeth pulls away to expose more of the tooth or tooth’s root. It is a common dental problem that often goes unnoticed until it is too late. Many patients do not notice gum recession because it is a gradual process. If gum recession remains untreated, it can cause significant damage to the supportive bone, and eventually, tooth loss.

Causes of Gum Recession

Periodontal (gum) disease is the main culprit of gum recession. Periodontal disease is an infection that targets the gum tissue, supportive bone, and connective ligaments that hold your teeth in place. The infection is caused by the bacteria in the plaque and tartar that form around your teeth and gums. In an attempt to fight the bacteria, your immune system produces toxins that contribute to the infection. In most cases, periodontal disease is the result of inadequate oral hygiene, genetic makeup, hormone changes, diabetes, and other systemic illnesses. Tobacco use can also increase your risk. You may also experience gum recession due to aggressive brushing or flossing, bruxism (teeth grinding), or misaligned teeth.

If your gum recession is caused by heavy plaque and tartar buildup, the first stage of treatment is scaling and root planing. During this procedure, we removed the bacterial plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and root. If your recession is severe, we will recommend a tissue graft.

Tissue Grafting Procedure

There are three types of tissue grafts. During your consultation visit, [[[CLIENTEX:DOCNAME1]]] will determine which graft is right for you. The graft procedures include:

  • Connective tissue graft — During the procedure, we will make an incision in the roof of your mouth to create a flap. Next, we will remove some of the subepithelial connective tissue from underneath the flap. This tissue is then sutured to the gums that surround the exposed root. We complete the procedure by stitching the flap back to the palate.

  • Free gingival graft — This procedure is very similar to a connective-tissue graft. However, we remove the tissue directly from the palate instead of making a flap. This method is most effective for patients with thinner gums.

  • Pedicle graft — During this procedure, we will create a flap to graft tissue for the surrounding gums. The flap, known as a pedicle, is only cut away on one side. Then, the tissue is pulled over and sewn in place to cover the exposed root.

Recovery From a Tissue Graft

After your procedure is complete, we will give you a set of instructions regarding postoperative care. Be sure not to floss or brush the gum tissue that was repaired until it has properly healed. The amount of pain you have after surgery depends on the type and extent of the graft. If no tissue is taken from the palate, you should have little to no pain. Over-the-counter medication should keep you comfortable in the first few days after surgery.
