Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are a frequently problematic third row of molars that erupt in later teen, or early adult, years. Though the problems may not be immediately evident, it is often recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed before they become an issue, patients who wait until later in their adulthood often experience more difficult extractions and damage to neighboring teeth. Our team at Bruce Burton, DMD, can examine the current status of your wisdom teeth and provide more specific information for your distinct needs.

The wisdom teeth, named for their late eruption, can lead to several oral health obstacles. There is frequently insufficient space for them to fully erupt or the teeth come up in the wrong position. Monitoring your wisdom teeth is important in determining when they should be removed. We will be checking for:

Some of the tools used in pulling Wisdom Teeth in Bremerton Washington
•  Impacted Teeth: Teeth that are impacted mean that they are unable to fully rise up into position, they are stuck lower in the gum line due to lack of space. Impacted teeth are teeth that will suffer from continuous problems with bacterial infections and decay, that is because bacteria and debris can easily get trapped below the gums in the tooth. A bacterial infection is unhealthy for your teeth, your gums, and your overall health.
•  Poorly Positioned: Besides being impacted, some wisdom teeth have had their course disrupted, twisting their position. As the tooth tries to erupt, it can push neighboring teeth out of alignment. This can damage teeth and roots.
•  Poor Hygiene: Due to the location, wisdom teeth are often not cleaned as well as they should be. If it is more difficult to brush and floss a wisdom tooth than your other teeth. This leaves the wisdom tooth susceptible to decay. Caries are frequently impossible for dentists to restore due to their distance.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Though Dr Burton is capable of removing wisdom teeth, most patients are referred to an oral surgeon. The surgical extraction of teeth is their primary work. Wisdom teeth are ideally removed in young adulthood, even if they have not proven to be an issue yet. This is due to catching the tooth in the young development of its roots when it is easier to remove. As the roots grow they extend further down and in many cases develop a hook shape which is more difficult and painful to remove.

Wisdom teeth extraction is a surgical procedure; this means that cuts are made into the tissue, and in most cases, the tooth is quartered and removed in pieces. A non-surgical extraction is done when a tooth is fully extended, and we can use an elevator to lift and then remove the tooth in one piece. Before surgery, the patient is anesthetized specific to their needs, to be as comfortable as possible. Following surgery, the office will provide you with information about excessive bleeding, swelling, symptoms of infection, and tips for better healing. We recommend patients take the prescribed pain relief for optimal comfort.
